Do you have services geared for the adult with symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)?

Yes, I do. The reason that many websites devoted to ASD seem to be geared toward children is that children are now diagnosed with ASD more often than they were previously. This may be due to the current level of awareness, or may be even due to a fad in psychiatry/psychology. However, in the past, individuals with these symptoms were given different labels or none at all. These individual grew up, and as adults, are now finding similarities between these descriptions and their own symptoms. Although they may not have the diagnostic label, they may be helped using the same techniques utilized for ASD. For those with social difficulties that may not be helped in the office, there is a large chance that In Vivo Socialization, a technique that I have developed, will help. This involves the therapist going out and observing the behavior as it plays out in the real world, and then creating highly individualized treatment plans and lessons based on these observations.

How do I know that you are good? How do I find the therapist that will actually help me?

This is a difficult question. I attempted to answer this in another section of this website. Therapy is an art and a science, and there is no rating scale available. You may need to check out various practitioners and prescreen them over the phone. When you make an appointment, make it carefully - for one clinician only. Then make sure to show at the appointed time. This way, you are doing your part in treatment. Show up for all of your appointments, and then reassess after a month. Remember that you are a consumer, and you are the ultimate judge. If you see someone and feel therapy is not working out after a month, then maybe you are right. It could be that a friend will recommend a clinician, and this clinician will not work at all for you. That is a reflective of the subjective nature of this process - there is no way to get an 'accurate' rating of a clinician.

What are your office hours?

Sessions are by appointment only. Available time slots vary, and most hours are between 9 am and 9 pm Monday through Thursday.

How do I make an appointment?

Please see the contact page.

What if I need to cancel an appointment? What are the policies for appointments?

Cancellation of appointments must be made within 48 hours of the appointment.

If you do not show for your appointment or fail to cancel within the time frame expected, you will be charged the session fee (not your copay but the full hourly rate).

If you need help in avoiding No-Shows, Dr. Shapiro may initially help you through email reminders or text reminders. Please discuss this in advance.

What are the procedure codes for reimbursement by my insurance company?

Why do some initial assessments take longer than others (and cost more)?

Some initial assessments with re-interpretation of tests may cost more due to the need to re-test in certain areas or add missing data, either through additional sessions or tests. When I receive a full battery of neuropsychological tests and other data, I need to spend time only on interviewing and test review, which reduces overall costs.

What kinds of insurance do you take? Do you take Medicare?

I take Aetna, Beacon Health, Emblem Health, GHI, Medicare, Magellan, Wellcare, Cigna, United Healthcare, and Blue Cross Blue Shield. In addition to regular sessions, I do EAP (Employee Assistance Program) sessions, which are assigned through your company. EAP sessions are meant to be short term (often the maximum allowed is five or six sessions). If additional sessions are required, then after reporting to EAP, you will use your regular insurance plan or choose self-pay.

For insurance companies for which I am out of network, you may be reimbursed through your insurance company. I will give you a receipt so that you may send it to your insurance, or I may submit to your insurance as a courtesy.

You may pay (your copay, deductible fees, and other fees) with cash, credit card, or check.
